At the age of 12 years Wenzel decided that he had had enough school and one day instead of going to school took off to the bush out the Pahikura block where his brothers were clearing the bush. A few days later he got word that his father was on the way so he went into the bush to hide as he did not want to go home. What a letdown when he found that his father had bought him some working clothes and a new pair of boots. 1916 went overseas with the Wellington Mounted Rifles to serve in Egypt and the middle East. On return in 1919 he was again in the Rangitikei district and married Miss Annie Jenkins the daughter of another Tutaenui pioneering family. Wenzel farmed around Hunterville for several years and then in partnership with Ted Mills bought a 1.000 acre farm to the West of Taumaranui from his brother in law, John Galpin. This land was only partly broken in was situated in the Punga Punga valley up a side road from the Taumaranui - Tokaanu road. This road is now Meads Road. He farmed there until retirement when he moved to Marton. He was a member of the Taumaranui County Council, Taumaranui Hospital board for many years, and finally as Chairman, and also chairman of the rabbit board, President of the the Winter and Summer show association. He was Grand Master of the Auckland district of the Manchester Unity Lodge which had a total of 72 lodges in the area. For 16 years he was the president of the Taumaranui Returned Service's Association and he is the holder of the Associatios Gold Star. He was also the president of the Friendly Societies Association in Taumaranui. He was district coroner and during the war he was a special constable. In 1947 he sold his farm for subdivision for rehab fsrms at Mananui and retired to Marton. In 1950 he contested the mayoralty and was successful. He held this position until his sudden death [ while chopping firewood]. He was a Justice of the Peace as was his wife Annie and his son Donald. 27 JAN 1891 Enrolled at Silverhope School 12 JUL 1963 Will probate/ Wanganui Served in W.W.!
