Note
Buried with his brother Nathaniel Meads There are various stories about Adam. Some that he left his wife, others that his wife left him depending on which part of the family that you came from. If you are a descendant on the male side of the family he left Alfred to carry on the farm and milking the cows at the age of 14 and took off to the south island or Australia and "went all religious." If you are a descendant of the female line Harriett left one day with the baby and went to town on the train shopping and never came back leaving Emma at the age of 12 to raise the family. For many years it has been a mystery as to what became of Adam. Through descendants of Nathaniel Meads we now know that he did "go religious" and was in Christchurch. He is buried in the Sydenham Cemetery. Adam had a deformed arm following an accident which could well account for him leaving the farm once Alfred was capable of milking the cows. It must have been quite devastating to Adam to have injured his arm and accept its limitations. This would have been before the days of milking machines. Adam was listed in the Freeholders of New Zealand in 1882 as a gardener of Palmerston North owning land in the Palmerston North Borough to the value of 45 pounds.
