Christening: June 28, 1793 Sproxton, Leicestershire, England

Marriage Marriage to Sarah Johnson, May 30, 1814 (Age 20) in Muston, Leicestershire, England.

This a note regarding Stoke links from the "Meads Family Tree".

Hi Stewart My 3rd Gt Grandfather was Thomas Stokes (1793 -1853) christened Sproxton, lived Muston /Branston. He had a daughter Mary christened 1815 so it is a family name. He married Sarah Johnson 1814, Muston Children James Godwin christenedin 1814 at Harby? Mary 1815 Muston William 1817 (my gt gt grn father who emigrated to NZ) John 1820 Thomas 1824 Branston Robert 1825 Branston Thomas was buried in grounds of St Guthlac, Branston. His headstone is right at the back of the church, close to the back wall.

From here back, I am relying on internet information, not original documents. His father was father, William Stokes christened 1770 Redmile, married Mary Vincent born ???? in 1790 at Saltby. They had 4 children that I can find:- Ann - christened 1791, Saltby Thomas - 1793, Sproxton Mary - 1797, Sproxton ********* 3rd Gt Gt aunt William 1798, Sproxton

This Mary I have marrying a Richard Fardell in 1815 at Croxton Kerrial I have not done any research on Richard.

William's father was another William, married Elizabeth Brown 1762 in Redmile 6 or possibly 7 children Alice Thomas Elisabeth Robert William ** Alice (possibly twice or double christening)

I don't have any other Fardells in my lists, but do have Johnsons (as above) I believe Sarah's parents were:- William Johnson and Mary Pickering siblings:- Mary Easter Eleanor

I have lots of other Johnsons/Johnstons but not from that area / time.

It might be interesting to see if any Fardells emigrated to NZ in the 1850 -1870 period. My gt gt grn father William above came in one of the 'first 4 ships' to Christchurch in Canterbury NZ 1850 and was followed by other Stokes and also other Leicestershire families from that area, some of whom married the Stokes here. Given the closeness of the villages they came from there was obviously a social if not family connection back in the UK. So wouldn't be surprised to find Fardells here as well. http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/surnames.stokes/1308.3.1/mb.ashx
